Research: Genre: Music video Examples

Music video 1- Tinie Tempah

This video follows the conventions of the the hybrid grime/dance hybrid genre we have chosen. Like the video we have chosen by Example kickstarts, no instruments are shown throughout the video. Women are the main focus in Frisky which reflects the "male gaze" theory, created by Laura Mulvey. The close ups of the women, with over the top makeup, gives the video Dance conventions. The setting is plain and obviously shot in a studio which makes the strobe lighting and dark costumes contrast to make it look simple but effective. this is a good example of grime music as the artist and featuring artist are black. Example has done a duet with Wretch 32 and skepta, both black artists.

Music video 2- Devlin

This video follows conventions of the grime genre that we have chosen. Like in the Kickstart video, no instruments are shown and the woman artist is shown briefly throughout the video as the video has a narrative. The lighting is high key, this creates a natural look. The typical grime setting is the council houses, car parks, tall flat buildings and garages, which is included in this video. E.g Example have this typical grime setting in the video Stay Awake;

Music Video 3- Professor Green Ft Emeli Sande

This video follows the conventions of the grime/Dance genre hybrid we have chosen. It doesn't show any instruments throughout the video. Like Example does in some of his videos, it includes a black artist; Emeli Sandes. The video consists of close ups of the two artists, more of the protagonist as a younger boy (the narrative). The video has fast paced edited to go with the beat of the music, giving it dance connotations. But the simple setting of a large spaced out warehouse, back lighting and low key (the whole room) lighting makes the grime genre. The costumes are mainly black and grey.

Music video 4- N-Dubz

This video follows the grime conventions because; the setting is shot in different locations. In a small house, on the top of run down buildings. Each artist wears a well known sports logo, representing their image. Throughout the video, no instruments are shown. the Laura Mulvey "the male gaze" was brought in to this when Tulisa walked across a car park. The camera tilted upwards and panned slowly to the right. The other male artists were visualized through close ups and when the the group were shown together it was usually through mid-shots. one of the artists are black which gives this grime connotations. All the costumes were dark colours until each member was shown and they had a signiture colour; tulisa, pink. Fazer; Blue and Dappy red.
